🎈 Gonzales Children’s Festival is on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 3-7pm at Pemberton Park in Fairfield Gonzales where there will be face painting, live music, dancers and more!

🏡 Guided tours of the Ross Bay Villa Historic House and Garden. Learn about the Roscoe family, their myriad connections in Victoria and England, on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 2pm.

🎨 Friends of Emily Art Market at Emily Carr House. This event on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 11am to 3pm is an opportunity for some early holiday shopping. Buy a gift, or treat yourself, and enjoy some refreshments.

💐 Monterey Open House for 50+ adults. Discover the diverse assortment of affordable clubs and activities available for adults 50+ years at the Monterey Recreation Centre on Sept. 26 from 1-2:30pm in the Garry Oak Room.

🎼 Monterey Music Bingo is on Thursday, Sept. 19 from 5:15-8:15pm at the Monterey Recreation Centre. The night will feature nostalgic tunes and bingo excitement. Members can purchase tickets for $21, while non-members can join for $25.

🐟 Bowker Creek Biodiversity Day to be held on Sunday, Sept. 22 from 1-4pm at Lansdowne Middle School South Campus. Come learn about the creek and the vision for its future at this family-friendly, free event that will feature music by The Bald Eagles Band, games, crafts, and ice cream.

🏡 Conflict over potential housing near Carnarvon Park. Options proposed for Carnarvon Park include an indoor pickleball court beside the fields. The mayor says if a new building is built, it could make sense to have some housing in it. Some residents argue, though, fear the precedent of putting housing anywhere on public parkland. 😲 Worker slapped after waking woman in Oak Bay. The worker was allegedly trimming hedges at the Victoria Golf Club and was slapped by a woman who was sleeping in her car in the parking lot at the club on Beach Drive. [Times Colonist]

📱 Oak Bay Police catch two drivers using phones. The distracted drivers were then found by police to have been violating other rules, including having an expired work visa, which prohibits them from driving in BC. [CHEK]

🧡 Victoria Native Friendship Centre calls on Oak Bay to support pledge ahead of National Truth & Reconciliation Day on Sept. 30 and Orange Shirt Day. Call to Action 92 (of the 94 Calls) is for economic reconciliation. For this reason the Small Business Pledge was initiated. Impressive forts at the beach

An Oak Bay local commented on the string of impressive forts that people have been building this summer along Willows Beach. There has been a noticeable increase in well-constructed and creative forts and one commenter was wondering what was behind this expression of creativity—or engineering. With one person suggesting that they must have been done by an engineering or architecture company.

Aside from some reports suggesting that the work was done by individual fort enthusiasts, and is not the work of professionals, no one came forward or confirmed that they knew who has been building them. Do you have any intel?

Speergrass concerns

An Oak Bay local posted their concerns for local pets and small children amid the increase in speargrass in the community, which can be particularly dangerous to dogs. They also wanted to thank the many in the community who have been mowing and trimming it to keep it low enough to prevent it from causing harm.
