Oak Bay Police said the victim was told the βbank inspectorβ needed to access his computer to identify sources of two fraudulent transactions. He was then told $7K had been deposited into his account and he was to buy $13,500 worth of gift cards, which he did before he called police. | | | Seeking witnesses after a close call on Beach Drive | An Oak Bay local reached out to the group after a close call that they say nearly resulted in a head-on collision near the golf course. The original poster said that late Thursday evening this week, they were surprised to see a vehicle in their lane. In an effort to avoid a collision, the driver swerved into a grassy area and said two witnesses came by to check on her and her 11-year-old daughter. | While they were fortunately unharmed, they are seeking the two witnesses who stopped to check on them, as they may have valuable information to add to the police report, particularly for a description of the vehicle, which they donβt recall because the incident was quite a blur. | | IN OTHER NEWS | | Public transit in Oak Bay | Readers of the Oak Bay Local newsletter responded to a survey in last weekβs edition that sought to understand whether they would use public transportation if it was available to them for free. | After receiving 311 votes, 83% said βYesβ that they would absolutely use free public transit in the community. One respondent over the age of 65 said that they absolutely would love to use this service, if it was available, and said they planned on approaching their MLA with this idea. They said that as a widow over the age of 65, having a pass to get around with saves the hassle of having to carry the correct amount of cash, and is a pleasant way to get around. | Others said that they support the idea as an alternative to car use, and would like to discourage so much car use in the community. |
