| | PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT | To join the conversation, become a member of the Oak Bay Local Facebook Group | Treating cedar planters | Oak Bay locals have long been reaching out to their neighbours, looking for advice on various gardening issues in the community. This week, a local sought help to understand how best to treat and protect cedar deck planters from the elements, which were on her deck. | One suggestion was to use linseed oil, though some warned that there is a risk of developing mould with this option. Others said that theyβve had good results from using raw (not boiled) linseed oil for a reclaimed pallet, though it did take some time to dry. Another suggestion was to use Sunfast, which is a more expensive option at around $100 per gallon, or Sikkens stain in cedar tone (also known as Sico stain) which can be wiped onto cedar with a rag, and residual stain can be wiped off after 10 minutes. | Another suggestion was that the planter boxes should be up on little βfeetβ, available at plant stores, otherwise they will eventually rot the deck. | | | Community pool services | A community member sought support from others this week as the Crystal Pool replacement project was up for approval this past Thursday at Victoria City Council. The project has been in the works for years and the closure of the aged pool will affect many users in the community for years. | The city unanimously voted to hold a referendum that will ask voters two questions, which include: | Whether the city should borrow up to $168.9 million to build a new recreation facility to replace Crystal Pool, and Whether the new facility should be built in Central Park North or South.
