COMMUNITY EVENTS | π‘ Oak Bay Tea Party starts today from 4pm until 10pm at Willows Park to mark its 62nd year. The Tea Party weekend will include its usual rides, games, live music, and carnival food. The event runs Friday, 4-10pm; Saturday 10am-10pm; and Sunday 10am-7pm. Check out other details of the event. | π Make a Difference Week will take place from Saturday, June 1 at 8am to Sunday, June 9 at 7pm. The event is hosted by the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER),and Friends of Uplands Park, and is an annual week of global restoration action where individuals and organizations from around the world host and participate in local volunteer restoration events. [Victoria News] | π Oak Bay endorses resolution to provide free transit to seniors and youth. On Monday, May 27, two Union of British Columbia Municipalitiesβ (UBCM) resolutions which ask the BC government to make transit free for all BC youth and seniors were endorsed by Oak Bay, in an effort to promote greener transportation options. [Victoria Buzz] | π The parking lot at Firefighterβs Park will be closed until July for the installation of a fire truck apparatus storage structure for Oak Bay Fire. The structure will be built in order to store a new ladder truck thatβs too large to fit in its firehall, which was originally built in 1938. The new ladder truck will be arriving in mid-June. [District of Oak Bay] | π Friends of Bowker Creek thanks Grade 6 class for their fundraising efforts, which raised $117 which will go toward future restoration projects. The students chose to support the group as part of an entrepreneurial project after having participated in the salmon fry project. | | PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT | To join the conversation, become a member of the Oak Bay Local Facebook Group | Critical Mass ride looks to draw attention to lack of cycling infrastructure in Oak Bay | An Oak Bay local posted a photo to the group, which shows a long line of cyclists riding side-by-side along an Oak Bay road. The original poster said that they were βstuckβ behind the group with many other commenters suggesting they should be riding single file. | The point of the ride however, was to draw attention to the fact that many cyclists donβt feel safe riding in Oak Bay, and while they may be inconveniencing a few car drivers with the ride, many are looking for a viable option to commute by bike. Hundreds of comments to the post showed a range of opinions on the matter, with some saying βthey think they own the roadβ. Others noted that even though they may have inconvenienced a few, no one was hurt, and they plan to hold more rides to draw attention to the matter in the future. Do you cycle in Oak Bay? | |

Some helpful locals noted that they appeared to be βfalse widowsβ and they are quite common (and not dangerous). Have you ever spotted these in Oak Bay?
