Our take
In 1984 seven women artists rented the annex of an upholstery shop on Fell Street. The entrance was round the side, so they called it Side Street Studio, and the name came with them when they moved to Oak Bay Avenue in the 1990s. The founding rule still holds: everything is handmade in B.C. by small makers. Jill Fitz Hirschbold, the fourth owner, runs it now. Women have run it the whole way through.
Local tipIt's upstairs in Suite 204, and closed Sundays. There's a whole section of gifts under $50.
