Oak Bay Seafood
Fish market and kitchen selling local fish, shellfish and smoked products, with gluten free fish and chips to eat in or take out.
Known for halibut and chips from fryers that are entirely gluten-free
Our take
Gregg and Anne Best fished halibut, salmon and crab off Haida Gwaii for decades. They built their boat in 1981 and named it The Hopeful, after the fisherman's wish: hope we're full. After shops in Cowichan Bay and the Victoria Public Market, they opened on Oak Bay Avenue at the end of 2016. The fryers are 100 per cent gluten-free, which people with celiac disease mention a lot. The counter carries live Dungeness crab and spot prawns, too.
Local tipEat it on the spot, because the batter softens on the way home. The kitchen opens at 11:30.
