Oak Bay Police Department

Municipal police station on Monterey Avenue handling non-emergency calls, police information checks and vacant home patrols.

Known for a small force that still runs Block Watch and checks on empty homes

Our take

Oak Bay's first constable, Steele, had no station for about six years. He lived and worked in an unheated 8-by-10-foot room in the municipal stable on Granite Street and complained about the draughts. Early officers patrolled muddy roads by bicycle and rounded up roaming cattle. Today the department has about 30 staff and focuses on community policing. Julie Chanin became chief constable in June 2024.
