Oak Bay Lawn Bowling Club

Members' club at Carnarvon Park with two lawn bowling greens in summer, short mat bowls in winter, croquet and card games.

Known for free Friday night bowling for anyone, all summer

Our take

In 1951 five Oak Bay men, one of them the police chief, asked for a bowling green in the new Carnarvon Park, on the old exhibition grounds and racetrack. Five volunteers built the first clubhouse in 1957, four of them over 70, and members brought chairs and kettles from home. Whites are still worn for Opening Day and tournaments, and red rain gear is reserved for umpires. In winter the club moves indoors for short mat bowling, bridge, mahjong and table tennis.

Local tipVisitors Night is every Friday, May to September. Arrive by 6 for a quick lesson, play starts at 6:30, and wear flat-soled shoes.
