Monterey Recreation Centre
Municipal centre for adults 50 and over, with fitness, classes, more than 35 volunteer-led clubs and the Fern Cafe.
Known for 35 clubs for the over-50s, from carpet bowling to ukulele
Our take
In 1968 the District bought an estate house on this site for $50,000, and the seniors' centre opened in it in 1971. Today membership is for adults 50 and up, and it covers more than 35 volunteer-led clubs and drop-ins: table tennis, billiards, woodworking, Scrabble, ukulele and more. There's a wood shop, a billiards room, and a singing group called the Monterey Avenue Minstrels. Members help run the place, down to the cashiers at the Fern Cafe.
Local tipThe Fern Cafe sits under a big skylight, up the ramp from Hampshire Road on the north side. The small lots are two-hour. Buy a parking decal at reception for longer visits.
