Overdue book returned Due Sept. 1, 1983. Returned at last. A copy of War and Remembrance has made it back to the Oak Bay library, 43 years late. Image: AI-generated illustration. The book arrived with no note, no barcode and no borrower’s name. It still had its paper checkout card and catalogue card. Its spine was cracked; there was dust. The Times Colonist reports that the 1978 Herman Wouk novel came back last week. Staff cannot trace who borrowed it: records from that far back have been purged for privacy. Whoever finally brought it in remains unknown. It will not return to the lending shelves. Staff may add it to the library’s heritage collection, but they have not decided yet. Have an overdue book at home? GVPL eliminated overdue fines in 2024. You can return it without an accumulating daily late fee. There is no need to try to beat 43 years. Sources · Times Colonist |
