| | COMMUNITY NEWS | 🏌🏽♂️ A woman sued Vic Golf Club, after she said a ball struck her in the face while she was in her car, as she was driving by the club on Beach Drive in June. She filed a civil suit naming the club, Oak Bay, and the golfer who hit the ball, saying she suffered serious physical and mental injuries that affected her ability to earn a living. [Times Colonist] | ⛵️ Oak Bay and yacht club team up to remove derelict boat. Yacht club workers tried to remove it from the Cadboro Bay marina, but it became beached. The vessel fell under federal jurisdiction, prompting a two-month bureaucratic delay. After Oak Bay Parks pleaded with Transport Canada, the boat was finally taken away for disposal. [Oak Bay News] | 🏀 UVic guard Diego Maffia named Male Athlete of the Year. Maffia leads Canadian university basketball in scoring after coming out of Oak Bay High School touted as the most prolific scorer in BC high school basketball history. Maffia was said to be one of the most sought-after recruits in the country. [University of Victoria Varsity Athletics] | 🚗 Mobility scooters could soon be added to CRD bike lanes. Advocates say bike lanes should be included in all-ages and abilities cycling facilities. A motion to advocate to the province will go to the Capital Regional District (CRD) board on March 13. | | PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT | To join the conversation, become a member of the Oak Bay Local Facebook Group | Locals continue to be the target of phone scams | Oak Bay residents have had ongoing trouble with receiving messages from phone scams, often from people impersonating familiar organizations. One local said this week that they received a call from someone purporting to be from the CRA, and who provided their name, phone number and insisted that they were referencing a specific tax form. The call was not a robocall and this recipient knew that it wasn’t legitimate, since the CRA doesn’t call about such things, or will ever use pressure tactics in order to gain confidential information or make threats. | This particular scam has been reported for a few years now and the Government of Canada has a scam alerts page on its website which details this one and a list of scams that have been reported. | | | Owl or cougar? | An Oak Bay local reached out to the group this week after they thought they saw a cougar climb a tree in their backyard, along Lansdowne near the golf course around 4pm on Thursday. After snapping a photo (with very low resolution) they were hoping others could help them zoom in to confirm whether the sighting was legit. | Another local walked around the area extensively with binoculars and though they didn’t spot a cougar, they did hear an owl hooting for a couple of hours, which was unusual and could have meant there had been a cougar in the area. Though most concluded that it likely wasn’t a cougar, conservation officers were called to look into it. | |
