Up to 25 businesses on Oak Bay Avenue between Richmond Road and Monterey Avenue will take part in the free self-guided art tour, with artwork on display in their shop windows from Aug. 10 to 18. | π Uplands Park Insect Bioblitz. Join UVic Bugs and Friends of Uplands Park on Saturday, Aug. 17 from 9-11pm and Sunday, Aug. 18 from 1-3pm. Meet at the Beach Drive Cattle Point entrance and join the project on Inaturalist all weekend long. | π The last Oak Bay Night Market of the season will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 11 from 4-8pm. Markets were held every second Wednesday of the month, when Oak Bay Village transforms into a European-style street market with fresh and local produce, food and artisanal goods. | | COMMUNITY NEWS | π Camosun College receives funding approval for student housing. The project will be its first-ever student housing project on the Oak Bay side of the Lansdowne campus. Construction plans will include a six-storey, timber-frame building on the Lansdowne campus off Foul Bay Road, which will have 423 affordable beds. [District of Oak Bay] | π Biggβs killer whale sightings up this year. The Orca Behaviour Institute found that there was a 70% increase in Biggβs sightings last monthβ214 unique sightings, compared with 124 last July. This has been good news for tourism and whale watching companies who have been able to observe orcas in the Salish Sea every day since March. [Capital Daily] | π§― Oak Bay Police look for help from the public to identify arson suspect. Around 1am on Friday Aug. 9, staff were closing up a business on Oak Bay Avenue near Foul Bay Road when they heard something, and found flames while they investigated. Staff were able to put out the fire using a fire extinguisher. Security footage shows the suspects pouring something and lighting a fire on the steps and floor mat. There were no injuries and the building wasnβt damaged. [Global News] | π΄ββοΈ The District of Oak Bay is seeking feedback on planned cycling improvements for Henderson Road and Haultain-Estevan Avenue. The draft designs can be viewed here, and the survey is available here. The design team hosted a bike tour with residents this week where the public was invited to ask questions about the design. Detours will be in place for the several routes along the drive, which can be viewed on this map.
