Five Victoria chefs compete at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel on September 29. Tom Cochrane plays while one winner earns a trip to the national culinary championship. Canada's Great Kitchen Party brings five chefs to the Oak Bay Beach Hotel on Tuesday, September 29. Each serves a signature dish with Canadian wine, beer or spirits, and the judges send one winner to the national championship in Ottawa. The contenders are Sam Harris of Cafe Brio, Corbin Mathany of Ugly Duckling, Castro Boateng of House of Boateng, Israel Alvarez M of MAiiZ and Paul Moran of Sixty Forty. Tom Cochrane performs and Olympic champion Adam Kreek hosts. Tickets cost $500. The organizer says dietary restrictions cannot be accommodated, although common allergens and ingredients will be listed. Proceeds support music education and youth opportunities in sport and health. The mayoral challenger is campaigning on healthcare, housing and climate ahead of the October 17 vote. Sam Holland is challenging incumbent Kevin Murdoch for mayor. He told Oak Bay News that his first priority would be a municipally supported family-doctor clinic, pointing to Colwood's model. His campaign platform also backs more housing near village centres and major transit corridors, plus faster preparation for extreme heat and smoke, along with flooding.
