🎭 Tickets are now available for Oak Bay High Musical theatre production Chicago Teen Edition, at the Dave Dunnet Community Theatre from Mar. 3 to 11.

💃🏼 Seven-piece horn-driven band Hank Lionhart & The R&B Toasters will hold a dance party with the Butterhorns on Saturday, Mar. 4 from 6 to 10pm at the Oak Bay Rec Center. 

📚 Oak Bay Public Library announces temporary popup location in the Cedar Room at the Monterey Recreation Center, beginning 10am on Tuesday, Mar. 6, which will remain open until the library resumes regular hours. 

🚲 Oak Bay Bicycles to celebrate women in cycling on March 11 and 12 with an evening of fun, coaching talks, group rides, and more!

🏆 Camosun Chargers took double gold in western volleyball championships: Both men's and women's teams emerged from the finals as champions, with Oak Bay High athlete Lucas Maffia among the winners!

😞 Empty scooter owner was found to have died: An electric mobility scooter and some belongings were found near Dallas Road last week, which prompted VicPD to issue a community update last Saturday. Police later said that the owner died, and they located their body in Oak Bay. The death was not considered suspicious.

Locals reflect on Marina restaurant closing its doors

It's no secret that restaurants have been struggling this year even as pandemic restrictions lift and people grow more comfortable dining indoors, and Oak Bay has not been immune to the struggle. The industry has continued to grapple with staffing shortages and rising costs due to inflation, among other trends.

Oak Bay locals reflected on their memories and thoughts as to what they believe are the factors that have most impacted the industry at a local level. Some said the increased pressure to tip higher amounts for goods and services, like delivery/takeout service, has contributed to more people choosing to eat out less often. Some locals also speculated that the debate over the future development of Spewhung/Turkey Head may have played a factor in the Marina closure. Others reflected on their memories of dining there with friends and family, the legacy of its original owner Bob, and one Oak Bay local reminisced about having their first drink at the Marina fifty years ago. 

Oak Bay residents give shoutouts to local businesses they value in the community

Recent business closures have prompted Oak Bay residents to reach out to the community and share which local shops they love going to again and again. One of the unique characteristics of Oak Bay is the amount of unique shops, cafés, and community meeting spaces that continually bring people together. Many locals believe these shops and meeting spaces are what makes Oak Bay so special. From coffee at Ottavio or Hide + Seek Coffee, to enjoying classic fish & chips at Willows Galley, Ivy's Bookshop, or shoe repairs at the Oak Bay Cobbler.

Despite the many challenges facing local businesses today, it's clear that the community is invested in doing all that they can to ensure they remain open and thriving. What businesses or community spaces are you thankful for in this community?
