Oak Bay Mayor Kevin Murdoch called the move by the province “political theatre” rather than an attempt to solve the problem. Murdoch argued that the small municipality is being unfairly singled out and that the thousand-unit deficit reported in Vancouver matters much more. He said Oak Bay has been trying to get help from the province and its advisers for the past year, and that the district told BC it would be slow in the first year because approvals don't immediately translate to finished homes. Common complaints are the distress pyrotechnics can cause pets, birds, fish, and wildlife.
