🎈Celebrated local Paul Kilshaw remembered for his balloon twisting and magical presence throughout the community of Oak Bay. Others may remember him from the time he entertained Prince George and Princess Charlotte at a Government House garden party in 2016. He said that while he had been on edge knowing he would be entertaining royalty, the Duke and Duchess made him feel comfortable, saying "It was almost like talking to a neighbour." [Globe And Mail]

Caution while kids are playing outside

An Oak Bay local with young children sought advice from the group, asking whether "caution while kids playing" signs are allowed, and whether they work. Another local clarified that they are allowed, and are also available from BCAA for the summer season for free. Another local kindly pointed out that Domino's also offers the signs and several have said that they feel they do have an impact on calming traffic by serving as a reminder to drivers to slow down and be aware of surroundings.

Fort Street bike lane addition causes tension in Oak Bay

An Oak Bay local raised some concerns for motorists who are expecting more disruptions to their daily drive from Oak Bay. Some fear it will lead to frustration among motorists, and few additional bike commuters. The post ignited quite a debate that (at last count) garnered 230 comments including one that dubbed the thread "the most Oak Bay post ever."

One user said that while they support bike lanes and the ability to safely get around the community by bike, there is a perception that there is a lack of foresight and planning on what streets will get a bike lane, which has led to some unintended consequences on some routes. One example is how the Richmond Street bike lane has been polarizing due to it being a key route, and many questioned whether an alternative, quieter street may have been a better option for a bike lane addition.

Others praised all new bike lane additions as a step toward safer cycling routes for all, especially considering the rise in the use of e-bikes, which are a more accessible option for some Oak Bay bike riders.

The @friendsofbowkercreek team have been sharing exciting updates on new developments with their salmon recovery project, which is being led by the Friends of Bowker Creek Society, Peninsula Streams Society, Goldstream Hatchery, Department of Fisheries & Oceans, Oak Bay staff and council, and its many dedicated volunteers, community partners, and supporters.
